Education

Sharing our insurance and safety expertise

Co-op employees often get the chance to educate the public on insurance and loss prevention matters. Here are some recent examples:

Talking with farmers about direct marketing

Agency Manager Kevin Bourdon talked with members of the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont and the Vermont Farmer's Market Association at a conference at Vermont Law School on January 12, 2008.

Kevin's session focused on insurance and farmer's markets. Participants learned why both a market and its individual vendors require protection from various types of claims, and there was much discussion within the group about how to ensure proper coverage.

Kevin plans to work with NOFA-VT and the Vermont Farmer's Market Association to draft coverage guidelines for those involved in these activities.

Guest lectures at Vermont Tech

Co-op employees Leo Larocque and Gene Bastian, at far right, discussing farm safety and insurance matters with Vermont Tech agricultural students during a tour of the campus farm operation. In October 2007, Loss Control Supervisor Leo Larocque, Special Investigator Gene Bastian and Customer Relations Manager Fletcher Brush led sessions for first-year agricultural students at Vermont Technical College.

Leo, Gene and Fletcher began each session with a classroom presentation and discussion. Then they led tours of VTC's farm operation, during which the groups talked about safety hazards, claims, and their effect on farm operations and families.

Co-op safety games featured at Idaho National Lab fair

Thousands of schoolchildren played Co-op's woodstove, fire, and outdoor safety Web games at the 2007 Idaho National Laboratory Science and Engineering Expo in Sept, 2007. The three games were available for play at a safety-themed booth at the fair in Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Though Co-op doesn't serve insurance needs in Idaho, we were pleased to lend the games and help spread the safety message!

(Of course, Web site visitors are welcome to play our games anytime!)
